The Benefits of Talbeena: A Healing and Nourishing Broth


Talbina is a soothing and nourishing broth made from ground barley, known for its numerous healing properties. Mentioned by Ibn al-Qayyim in his significant work, The Prophetic Medicine, talbina is praised for its beneficial effects, especially for those who are ill or grieving. In this work, Ibn al-Qayyim described talbina as a light soup with a consistency similar to yogurt (laban), from which it gets its name.


Talbina is made by cooking barley flour, including its husks, which gives it a different texture from barley water. While barley water is prepared using whole barley, talbina uses ground barley, making it easier to digest and allowing the nutrients to be absorbed more quickly by the body. Ibn al-Qayyim highlighted that talbina "relaxes the heart of the sick person" and provides nourishment that helps warm and soothe the stomach. It can also promote regular bowel movement and contribute to overall well-being. Additionally, it aids in relieving sorrow and helps in the recovery process of those who are unwell.


Prophetic Traditions on Talbina

Talbina holds a special place in Prophetic traditions, and several Hadiths emphasize its healing benefits:


Aisha (may Allaah be pleased with her) narrated that when a relative of hers passed away, the women would gather and then disperse, except for her close family and friends. She would instruct that talbina be prepared. Afterward, Tharid (a dish made with meat and bread) was served, with talbina poured over it. She mentioned, "Eat of it, for I heard the Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu alayhi wasallam) say, ‘Talbina soothes the heart of the patient and relieves them of some of their sadness.’” [Saheeh al-Bukhari (5058)].


The Messenger (sallallaahu alayhi wasallam) also said, “Talbina gives rest to the heart of the patient, makes it active, and relieves some of their sorrow and grief.” [Saheeh al-Bukhari (5325)].


He further remarked, “Talbina soothes the grieving heart and cleanses the ailing heart, just as one of you cleans dirt off his face with water.” [Saheeh Sunan Ibn Maajah (3445)].


The Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wasallam) advised, “You should eat the beneficial thing that is unpleasant to eat (talbina), meaning broth. If any member of the Messenger of Allaah’s family was sick, the cooking pot would remain on the fire until either the person recovered or passed away.” [Saheeh Sunan Ibn Maajah (3446)].
